Is Our Industrialized Food Supply Killing Us?

Despite having the best health care technology in the world, our nation’s health continues to decline as chronic inflammatory diseases are on the rise. Our nation is in a food crisis. The food supply we’re eating and the lifestyles we’re living are causing dramatic changes to our bodies, leading to diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and other chronic inflammatory diseases. Keep reading to find out the even more alarming statistics he’s learned since then, and how we can reverse this dramatic shift in our genes, and ultimately, our health.

Food Crisis – Where Do We Stand?

Our genes were simply not designed for today’s lifestyles, which is why the rate of chronic inflammatory diseases continue to escalate. Continued changes to our food supply, diets and lifestyles have created a perfect storm that is further escalating our crisis of chronic inflammation, including, but not limited to the increase in omega 6s in our food supply and our sedentary lifestyles. Check out a few alarming statistics that our nation’s food crisis and inflammatory lifestyles have lead us to today:

  • Current figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put the prevalence of obesity among adults at about 66 percent. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine concluded that if we were to continue at the present rate, “by 2048, all American adults would become overweight or obese.”
  • Allergies now rank sixth among chronic human diseases.
  • Today, more than 25 million Americans have asthma—twice as many as in 1990. And the severity of the disease appears to be on the rise as well: More people died from asthma in 2000 than in 1970.
  • Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, according to statistics released by the CDC in 2008. Estimates are that by 2025, the number of Americans with the disease will be close to 50 million.
  • Arthritis and joint disease affect 43 million people in the United States, almost 20 percent of the population. This number is expected to surpass 60 million by 2020.
  • More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, with the direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias topping $148 billion annually, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Knowing that we needed to make a change, and make it soon, Gene Smart designed a new anti inflammatory diet & exercise program based on the latest understanding of the relationship between our diet & exercise, our genes and our health, and especially our genes that control the inflammatory response.
