By definition, we are all getting older. So the question is not whether our bodies will age, but how well they will age. The great news is that we can positively impact our bodies aging process, increase energy, lose weight and improve our overall health by making thoughtful choices about the foods we choose and the way we exercise.
Here are three ways to increase the life in your years, as well as the years in your life.
1. Take Those Omega-3s Every Day
The omega 3 connection to healthy aging is based on building evidence that associates part of our chromosomes called telomeres with the rate in which our cells age, or biological aging. The discovery of telomeres and its connection to biological aging was awarded The Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009. Telomeres are protective caps of DNA at the tips of a chromosome that get shorter the more times a cell divides. Over time, telomeres can be damaged and shortened due to many factors including inflammation, smoking, weight gain or lack of exercise. When the telomeres become too short, the cell can no longer divide, and will become inactive or “die”. The shortening of these telomeres has been identified as a new biomarker of biological aging.
In a recent omega 3 aging study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, patients with a high Omega 3 Index had a much slower rate of biological aging. In fact the quarter of patients with the highest Omega 3 Index had a 65% slower rate of telomere shortening compared to those with the lowest Omega 3 Index. The patients in this study with the fastest aging cells had an average Omega 3 Index of about 3.1%, compared to an average score of 8.7% in the group with the slowest aging cells.

2. Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise can also slow your rate of biological aging. In a study that evaluated numerous sets of twins with varying activity levels, it was found that the twin who was more active had much longer telomeres than the less active twin.
