Mouth Watering Strawberries (Even Chocolate Covered!)

Mouth Watering Strawberries

June 19, 2012

It’s a summer morning. Imagine heading out into the morning sunshine, basket in hand, family at side, ready to take on the garden that is deliciously blooming with red, ripe strawberries. It may have never crossed your mind that these sweet little gems are good for you – but – they are! Keep reading for some amazing strawberry facts (did you know they can whiten your teeth?), and some sweet strawberry recipes!

Boost your vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that helps your body fight illness, including the common cold. It keeps your skin healthy (who doesn’t love a nice glow?) and promotes better eye health. A half cup of fresh strawberries contains 50mg of vitamin C – more than half of your daily recommendation!

Stand strong

Strawberries contain a healthy amount of Manganese (one cup contains 21% of your daily recommendation), which is necessary for strong and healthy bones.

Whiten your teeth

Did you know strawberries can help whiten your teeth? The malic acid in them removes surface stains. Mash a couple of  strawberries with a teaspoon of baking soda, then apply the mix to your toothbrush and brush away for a few minutes. (Just be sure to floss after to remove any seeds between your teeth!)

Strawberries support an anti inflammatory diet

Strawberry Spinach Salad

Start with a handful of spinach. Add chopped strawberries, fresh blueberries, and chopped walnuts. Drizzle with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Other delicious add-ins: fresh orange slices, sweet bell peppers, blanched almonds, and cherry tomatoes. Have fun with your salad!

Vanilla Strawberry Delight

Scoop half a cup of vanilla Greek yogurt into a bowl. Top with fresh strawberries, steel cut oats, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Tip: store your greek yogurt in the freezer for frozen yogurt! Other fun additions to try: blueberries, raspberries, or a drizzle of agave nectar.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Dip strawberries in dark chocolate (just make sure it’s at least 60% cocoa) for a delicious, and (surprise!) good for you dessert. Both strawberries and dark chocolate are filled with polyphenols, a necessary component of the Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet.
