Love Your Heart Today

February is National Heart Health Month, and today, we celebrate love.  Here are a few ways to make sure you and your loved ones keep a strong and healthy heart!


Get Enough Omega-3s

Eat fish high in Omega-3s. We recommend getting your Omega-3 from fish sources because it provides you with both EPA & DHA, unlike other Omega-3 sources available. Click here for a list of fish high in Omega-3s.


Take a high quality supplement. For many people, it is difficult to get the recommended amount of Omega-3 solely through fish. Enrich Your Diet

Add fiber. Fiber helps you feel fuller longer, so if weight loss is one of your desired goals, fiber will help you in reducing your daily calories. Add delicious high fiber foods to your diet such as avocado, kale, black beans, oatmeal, and raspberries. Make healthy substitutions such as brown rice instead of white rice, and whole grain pasta instead of white pasta.

Increase Polyphenols. Add more polyphenols to your daily diet by eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking green teas, and choosing 100% fruit juices. Increasing your polyphenol intake is a Gene Smart principle and an important part of our anti inflammatory program, which works to keep your heart healthy! Get moving!

Exercise the right way. On the Gene Smart Program, you’ll exercise at least 5 days a week, for at least 30 minutes. Start by trying to achieve 50-75% of the maximum heart rate for your age.  You may need to do intervals at first to get enough quality exercise. Add more activity to your day. Take the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Take your dog out on a walk for an extra few blocks. Take a walk after lunch (bonus: it will help your food digest better and save you from that post-meal sluggish feeling!). Play sports or dance with your kids. All of these may seem like small activities – but they add up!

Encourage Your Loved Ones
