Omega 3 Index & Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio Test
The Gene Smart Omega 3 Index Home Blood Test measures your Omega 3 Index and your Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio. Your personal omega 3 home blood testing results provide actionable information to help you make smart, informed choices about your foods and supplements that may reduce your risk of heart disease, premature aging and whole body inflammation. The research supporting the Omega 3 test is so compelling that we believe everyone should have their Omega 3 Index and Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio tested. For those following the Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet & Exercise Program or The Living Abundantly Program, the Omega 3 home lab test results directly support the program's Add Omegas diet principle, providing personalized information to enable you to customize the program's recommendations based on your personal Omega 3 Index and Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio scores.
Once you test your Omega 3 Index and Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio, we recommend waiting at least three months after making changes to your diet before re-taking the omega 3 test to measure your progress. While you may see positive movement sooner, waiting three months will ensure you are measuring the full impact of your new eating and supplement choices.
Why is the Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio important? Due to dramatic changes to our food supply in recent generations, typical Americans have a much higher than desired Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio. The Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio is a measure associated with whole body inflammation. In his first book, Inflammation Nation, Dr. Chilton pioneered America's awareness of the association between whole body inflammation and many of our largest and fastest growing health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, allergies, asthma, cancer, autoimmune disorders and many others. Are you getting the right types and amounts of omega 3s and omega 6s in your diet every day? The only way to know for certain is to measure your Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio.
The Omega 3 Index may be your most important number for heart health.
The Omega 3 Index is a stronger predictor of heart disease risk than high cholesterol and other traditional heart risk factors. Recent studies have shown that individuals with a high Omega Index were up to 90% less likely die from a sudden heart attack than those with a low Omega 3 Index. That's right, 90%! And now, a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicates that a high Omega-3 Index may slow the biological aging process.
Now you can check your Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio and Omega 3 Index with the Gene Smart Omega 3 Index Home Blood Testing Kit. Using the Omega 3 test kit is easy. Simply follow the instructions in the convenient at home testing kit to collect a drop of blood and return your blood sample in the enclosed return envelope. Within about two weeks, you will receive your lab results by mail along with a customized report, explanation of results and resources to help you make and sustain changes to your diet to positively impact your omega scores and your health!

While scientists have long known the benefits of omega 3s for overall health, over the past decade research has proven that fish and fish oil dramatically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and that omega 3 levels are among the best predictors of future coronary heart disease.
The Omega 3 Index measures the amount of EPA and DHA omega 3s in red blood cells and is expressed as a percent of total fatty acids. The results of the Omega 3 Index test are represented by a score that can be used to assess you risk of heart disease, with a score of 4% or less indicating higher risk and a score of 8% or more indicating relatively low risk.

The Omega 3 Index has been shown to be a better predictor of heart disease, and especially sudden cardiac death, than traditional coronary heart disease risk factors including LDL and HDL cholesterol. Individuals with a high Omega 3 Index have a decrease in the relative risk for sudden cardiac death by as much as 90%.
The science behind the Omega 3 Index has been validated by data from large-scale human clinical studies including the Physicians' Health Study (PHS), which involved 14,916 healthy male physicians. In these studies the Omega 3 Index was clearly related to risk of having a heart attack.
Your Omega 3 Index cannot be predicted with certainty without analyzing your blood. Many factors including age, sex, weight, dietary and genetic factors, smoking, medications you may be taking, other medical conditions, as well as the source and quality of omega 3s and how they are consumed, can all influence your body’s response to EPA and DHA in your diet.
The Gene Smart test uses the HS-Omega 3 Index® methodology, which is the same methodology used in the large scale studies that validated the correlation between the Omega 3 Index and heart disease risk. Not all omega 3 home blood testing kits use this methodology, and those that do not may produce different scores from the same blood samples.
The Gene Smart Omega-3 Index gives you a direct indicator of whether you are getting enough Omega 3s in your diet to impart maximum protection from heart disease. If your Omega 3 Index is below the optimum level, you can decrease your risk by adding more Omega 3s to your diet by eating high omega 3 fish and taking a premium quality supplement. The Gene Smart Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement delivers 1,200 milligrams of EPA & DHA per 2 soft gel serving and was specially formulated to help individuals make a positive impact on their Omega 3 Index with just a couple of capsules each day.
Studies suggest the Omega 3 Index is an independent risk factor that is not influenced by other risk factors like cholesterol or blood pressure. All risk factors, including the Omega 3 Index, should be addressed as part of an overall approach to reducing heart health risk.
Changes to our food supply and diets over the past three generations have dramatically increased Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratios in America. Many experts believe that the shift has led to an increase in whole body inflammation and higher incidence of inflammatory disease including cardiovascular disease, asthma, allergies, diabetes, and arthritis
The Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio measures the proportion of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in your blood. The optimal omega 6 to omega 3 ratio has not been determined and is likely dependant on an individual’s genetic makeup and health status. However studies indicate that a ratio of below 5:1 is desirable and that a ratio of 2:1, like our hunter gatherer ancestors, would be approaching ideal. The Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet Program targets a ratio of less than 5:1.

Dr. Chilton’s latest research in nutrition/gene interactions(1) have demonstrated that shifting the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio from greater than 15:1 to less than 5:1 in humans can positively influence genes that provide protection against allergies and other inflammatory diseases.
Together the Omega 3 Index and the Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio are important and actionable measures of health. The Omega-3 Index lets you know if you are consuming enough omega 3 in your diet, while the Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio is an indication of whether you are consuming too much omega 6.
