In Win the War Within and his other books, Inflammation Nation, and The Gene Smart Diet, Dr. Chilton discusses the alarming role of inflammation in many of today’s diseases, and the critical need to fight inflammation to win the war within and improve our health.
One of the biggest problems in America is the combination of diets and lifestyles that lead to chronic inflammation, including high levels of omega 6 in our modern food supply. Inflammation is a growing epidemic that leads to a number of chronic diseases, including arthritis, asthma, obesity, heart disease, and many more.
Building on the strategies in Win the War Within and Inflammation Nation, Dr. Chilton's latest program, The Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet & Exercise Program utilizes the latest understanding of the science of inflammation, including the relation between our food & exercise, our genes and our health to offer a new program proven to fight inflammation, promote healthy active aging, and empower us to win the war within.
All inflammation is not bad. In fact, the inflammatory response is vital to sustaining life. When the body is presented with a virus or bacteria, it is the body’s immune system (and inflammatory response) that kicks in and fights off the virus or bacteria that cause disease. Inflammatory messengers called leukotrienes and prostaglandins play a crucial role in the inflammatory process, and unsurprisingly are responsible for many signs and symptoms we traditionally associate with inflammation. For example, when you get a paper cut, the prostaglandins encourage blood vessels in the area to dilate (causing the area to swell and redden) so that more white blood cells are able to come in and fight possible infection. The leukotrienes are the messengers that call for white blood cells to rush to the area and direct them where to go. Ideally, the white blood cells will “launch an attack” brutal enough to fight off the enemy, but controlled enough not to damage surrounding cells and tissues. The amount of leukotrienes present determines the scale of the attack from the white blood cells.
Why do we need to fight inflammation and win the war within? Inflammatory disease is, simply put, too much of a good thing. The inflammatory process operates in the same way whether your body is attacking a legitimate target, like an infection, or attacking itself, as it does when you have inflammatory disease.
We’re used to thinking of disease as what happens when some vital organ or system in the body stops working – if your eyes don’t work, you can’t see. By contrast, inflammatory disease isn’t caused by a malfunction in the way our system works. The system, in fact, is perfectly okay – it’s just firing too quickly. The internal dial in our bodies, set to trigger this essential defense reaction, is permanently set on “red alert”. And, while a preventative strategy is best, when our internal dial is set to red alert, it is time to fight inflammation and wage battle through the right anti inflammatory diet principles and the right approach to exercise to win the war within.
When the inflammatory messengers kick in, the immune system launches an attack, and the surrounding tissues are destroyed. Ordinarily, the tissues repair themselves in the normal course of healing. A little tissue damage is a small price to pay for a successfully vanished infection. However, when you have an inflammatory disease, the body produces too many of the inflammatory messengers, leukotrienes and prostaglandins. The more prostaglandins that are produced, the more blood vessels will dilate, which translates into redness and swelling. More prostaglandins also mean more pain. More leukotrienes, on the other hand, mean the body dispatches even more white blood cells, which turn into even more damage to the tissue. And the more leukotrienes you have, the longer those white blood cells are able to stay alive, creating a tremendous amount of damage on the body. In turn, the body suffers the effects of the inflammatory diseases such as asthma, arthritis, obesity, and heart disease.
In his books Win the War Within, Inflammation Nation, and The Gene Smart Diet Dr. Chilton has created science based anti inflammatory diet and exercise strategies to fight inflammation. Simple diet and lifestyle changes can help you greatly reduce whole body inflammation and associated risk of chronic inflammatory diseases so you can win the war within.
