Omega 3 Home Blood Testing

The Omega 3 Index Home Blood Testing Kit measures your Omega 3 Index, Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio, and Vital O-Mega 3 Scores™.  Your personal omega 3 home blood testing results provide important information to help you make informed  choices about your foods and supplements that may reduce your risk of heart disease, premature aging and conditions associated with whole body inflammation.

The research supporting the Omega 3 test is so compelling that we believe everyone should have their Omega 3 Index, Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio and Vital Omega 3 Scores tested.  If you are following the Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet, the Omega 3 home blood testing results will enable you to customize the program based on your personal Omega 3 Index, Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio and Vital O-Mega™ test scores.

Your Omega 3 Index, Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio, and Vital O-Mega Scores™ cannot be predicted with certainty without analyzing your blood.  Many factors including genetics, health status, source of omega-3s and how they are taken can all influence your body's response to omega 3 & omega 6 in your diet.

Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio Testing

Why is Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio testing important?  Changes to our food supply over the past 50 years have significantly increased the amount of omega 6 consumed in America, leading to dramatic increases in our Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratios, a measure associated with whole body inflammation.  In his first book, Inflammation Nation, Dr. Ski Chilton pioneered America's awareness of the connection between inflammation and many large, fast growing chronic health conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, allergies, asthma, cancer, autoimmune disorders and others.

The Omega 3 Index Blood Testing and Heart Health

The Omega 3 Index may be your most important number for heart health.

Recent studies have shown that the Omega 3 Index is a stronger predictor of heart disease risk than high cholesterol and other traditional heart risk factorsIn these studies, individuals with a low Omega Index were up to ten times more likely to die from a sudden heart attack than those with a high Omega 3 Index.  That's right, ten times!

In addition, a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that a high Omega 3 Index may slow the biological aging process (i.e. the rate at which our cells age).  In this 5-year study, those with a high Omega 3 Index had a 65% slower rate of biological aging compared to individuals with a low score.

Vital O-Mega Scores™ and Heart Disease Risk

The Vital O-Mega Scores™ include percent Omega-3 in HUFU, percent omega-6 in HUFU and an estimated heart risk based on those test results.  The acronym “HUFA” stands for Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids, which are essential, vitamin-like nutrients that we convert into hormones that influence inflammation and more, and have receptors on nearly every cell in the body.   The five most abundant highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in human blood – and the ones most significant to human health – are omega-3 EPA, DHA, and DPA* and omega-6 AA* and DPA**:

However, the Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ measures and reports the full spectrum of all nine omega-3 and omega-6 HUFA found in human blood.  Epidemiological evidence has shown that a person’s percent Omega-3 in HUFA Score and percent Omega-6 in HUFA Score are reliable predictors of their risk of dying from heart disease. For optimal heart and overall health, your percent Omega-3 in HUFA Score should be at least 50% and your percent Omega-6 in HUFA should be less than 50%.

Full Fatty Acid Profile

While we believe that the Omega-3 Index, Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio, and Vital Omega-3 Scores are the three most important and actionable measures included in the omega-3 test, your lab results will also include a full analysis of the fatty acids in your blood – 37 in all – as well as the percentages of saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and highly unsaturated fatty acids

*The term DPA refers to a fatty acid that can occur in omega-3 and/or omega-6 form in foods.

**AA constitutes most of the omega-6 HUFA found in the average American's blood and cell membranes, with the other three omega-6 HUFA constituting 10 to 20 percent of the total. In terms of total omega-6s in blood, polyunsaturated (short-chain) linolenic acid constitutes 25-30 percent, while AA constitutes 8-14 percent.

Home Blood Testing - The Omega 3 Index Test

While scientists have long known the benefits of omega 3s for overall health, over the past decade research has proven that fish and fish oil dramatically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and that omega 3 levels are among the best predictors of future coronary heart disease.

The Omega 3 Index measures the amount of EPA and DHA omega 3s in red blood cells and is expressed as a percent of total fatty acids.   The results of the Omega 3 Index test are represented by a score that can be used to assess you risk of heart disease, with a score of 4% or less indicating higher risk and a score of 8% or more indicating relatively low risk.

The Omega 3 Index has been shown to be a better predictor of heart disease, and especially sudden cardiac death, than traditional coronary heart disease risk factors including LDL and HDL cholesterol.  Individuals with a high Omega 3 Index have a decrease in the relative risk for sudden cardiac death by as much as 90%.

The science behind the Omega 3 Index has been validated by data from large-scale human clinical studies including the Physicians' Health Study (PHS), which involved 14,916 healthy male physicians.  In these studies the Omega 3 Index was clearly related to risk of having a heart attack.

Your Omega 3 Index cannot be predicted with certainty without analyzing your blood.  Many factors including age, sex, weight, dietary and genetic factors, smoking, medications you may be taking, other medical conditions, as well as the source and quality of omega 3s and how they are consumed, can all influence your body’s response to EPA and DHA in your diet.

The Omega-3 Index gives you a direct indicator of whether you are getting enough Omega 3s in your diet to impart maximum protection from heart disease. If your Omega 3 Index is below the optimum level, you can decrease your risk by adding more Omega 3s to your diet by eating high omega 3 fish and taking a premium quality supplement.  The Gene Smart Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement delivers 1,200 milligrams of EPA & DHA per 2 soft gel serving and was specially formulated to help individuals make a positive impact on their Omega 3 Index with just a couple of capsules each day.

Studies suggest the Omega 3 Index is an independent risk factor that is not influenced by other risk factors like cholesterol or blood pressure.  All risk factors, including the Omega 3 Index, should be addressed as part of an overall approach to reducing heart health risk.

Home Blood Testing

The Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio Test

Changes to our food supply and diets over the past three generations have dramatically increased Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratios in America.  Many experts believe that the shift has led to an increase in whole body inflammation and higher incidence of inflammatory disease including cardiovascular disease, asthma, allergies, diabetes, and arthritis

The Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio measures the proportion of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in your blood.  The optimal omega 6 to omega 3 ratio has not been determined and is likely dependant on an individual’s genetic makeup and health status.  However studies indicate that a ratio of below 5:1 is desirable and that a ratio of 2:1, like our hunter gatherer ancestors, would be approaching ideal.  The Gene Smart Anti Inflammatory Diet Program targets a ratio of less than 5:1.

Dr. Chilton’s latest research in nutrition/gene interactions(1) have demonstrated that shifting the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio from greater than 15:1 to less than 5:1 in humans can positively influence genes that provide protection against allergies and other inflammatory diseases.

Together the Omega 3 Index and the Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio are important and actionable measures of health.  The Omega-3 Index lets you know if you are consuming enough omega 3 in your diet, while the Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio is an indication of whether you are consuming too much omega 6.
