With the kids back in school, memories of summer vacations captured in picture frames, and the leaves changing colors, fall is a perfect time to give your health and wellness routine a makeover. Why wait until the New Year to make those resolutions? Start making healthy changes now, and you’ll start creating good habits that will last throughout (and past!) the holiday season.
Here are a few of our favorite ideas to revamp your daily routine. Who knows, you may have even reached your goals before that New Year’s Eve party rolls around!
Try something new – Ever wanted to take dance classes? Learn Tai Kwan Do? Master the jump rope as you did when you were a child? Fall is the perfect time! Many new fitness classes, adult sport teams, and fitness programs begin in the fall. And – with the kids back in school – you may have more time and options to check out these programs! If you learn something new now, by next summer, you'll have mastered the skill -- and you'll burn more calories doing it, just in time for swimsuit season.
Take advantage of the fall weather – The crisp autumn air, freshly harvested vegetables, apple orchards, and pumpkin patches – treat your senses! Walking, hiking, or cycling are all great activities for the fall. Look for a park or trail near you – it will be a wonderful opportunity to check out a new area, breathe in the fresh autumn air, and check out the beautiful fall colors in the changing leaves. Near a lake? Try kayaking – the beaches will be much less crowded at this time of the year. Or, help your house and yourself – raking the leaves or getting some fall yard work done is a great way to get your body moving and heart pumping!
Treat yourself – find something that you enjoy doing and take care of your mind, body, and spirit. Get a massage, take an art class, indulge in a new book, practice meditation, or plan a day trip that you’ve always wanted to take. Take care of all aspects of your health, so you can feel stronger mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Integrate exercise into your daily routine – Rather than the suggestions you may have already heard – take the elevator instead of the stairs – here are a few of our other favorite ideas for integrating exercise into your daily routine:
Have an hour for your lunch break? Pack a lunch and take 30 minutes to eat, and 30 minutes to walk. Not only is this a great way to fit in exercise, but it will help aid in digestion, and refresh your mind, helping you to be more productive throughout the rest of your day.
Taking the kids to soccer practice? Take a walk around the field or on a nearby path while your child practices. Find friends who may want to join you. It can be a great time to catch up or form new friendships!
Time for a business meeting? Have a walking meeting! Brainstorm ideas or delegate responsibilities on your walk. The fresh air may help spark new ideas, and everyone will feel better afterwards.
Stick with it – your body generally takes about four weeks to adapt to new lifestyle changes – which is around the time that many people feel the urge to quit. You are a strong person – stick with it! If you can foresee barriers holding you back – plan out how to get around them ahead of time. Busy week coming up? Plan time for exercise. Going out to eat? Check out the menu online and decide a healthy option ahead of time. If you can make it through the first month – you are more likely to stick with this lifestyle long term.
