Did You Miss Dr. Chilton’s Recent Webcast?

We’ll fill you in here! We were thrilled to host our very first webcast with Dr. Ski Chilton entitled, “Cravings, Choices, Changes” in which Dr. Chilton addressed the issue of inflammation, it’s effect on our health, and five solutions to reduce inflammation for a healthier, more abundant life. At Gene Smart, we want to empower individuals to live longer, healthier, more vital lives. Before sharing the solutions to live more abundantly, Dr. Chilton first explained why inflammation has become such a problem in our nation.

People who are overweight or obese have a lower life expectancy. A 40-year-old nonsmoking male who is overweight will lose 3.1 years of life expectancy; one who is obese will lose 5.8 years.  A 40-year-old overweight nonsmoking female will lose 3.3 years of life expectancy; one who is obese will lose 7.1 years. That’s 7 extra years you could be spending with your children and grandchildren!

 

Our nation is suffering from poor diets, lack of exercise, and ultimately, worsening health. In 1990, most states had an obesity rate of 10% or less. In 2010, at least 20% of the population in each state was obese; some were higher than 30%! In addition to growing obesity rates, chronic inflammatory diseases have also been on the rise.

  • Diabetes: 21 million Americans, 250 million world wide> 50% increase in last 10 years – by 2025, 50 million Americans, 380 million world wide
  • Arthritis and Chronic Joint Disease: 43 million people in the US -- almost 20% of the population. Will increase to more than 60 million by the year 2020.
  • Asthma: Over 30 million Americans today -- twice as many as in 1980
  • Allergies: More than 50 million -- 20% of US.  A 100% increase in prevalence of hay fever in developed countries each of the last three decades
  • Cardiovascular Disease: According to the National Heart Association, more than 71 million Americans have it in some form.
  • Obesity: 70% of Americans are Overweight or Obese.

The good news? It’s possible to rewrite your genetic destiny and increase not only the length, but the quality of your life. By following an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle, you can avoid chronic inflammatory diseases that so many Americans struggle with today. Here are Dr. Chilton’s 5 solutions for living a healthier, more abundant life.

Solution #1: Embrace the equation: calories in vs. calories out. If you’re looking to lose weight, the first step is toreduce your daily calorie intake. 3500 calories = 1 pound;  remove 500 calories/day X 7days=3500 cal. By removing 500 calories from your daily diet, you can lose 52 pounds in a year!

Solution #2: Use fiber and water to reduce calories. In the Gene Smart Diet Study, fiber was the #1 most important factor in helping individuals to feel fuller for longer, ultimately helping them reach their weight loss goals.  Fiber contains no calories and increases food volume (helping you to feel full). Solution #3: Utilize super foods (specific polyphenols). You can get polyphenols in dark skinned fruits and vegetables, green tea, even red wine and dark chocolate! We recommend that you get your polyphenols through high polyphenol food, but know that it can be difficult for many to get enough polyphenols in their daily diet, which is why we created our Pomegranate & Green Tea Extract.

Solution #4: Take Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3 has been shown to prevent vascular diseases, coronary heart disease, and stroke. There’s also good evidence that it helps in early childhood development and helps to slow dementia that comes with aging. In a recent study, individuals with a high Omega-3 Index were 10 times less likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest than individuals with a low Omega-3 Index. We created a list of high Omega-3 fish, and recommend that you obtain your Omega-3 through food, but again, we realize that it can be difficult for many to obtain the recommend amount of Omega-3 through fish alone, which is why we created our high quality Omega-3 Fish Oil.

Solution #5: Exercise for less time… but harder. On the Gene Smart program, the main reason to exercise is not for weight loss, but to reduce chronic inflammation. In addition, here are a few more benefits of exercise:

  • Prevents chronic disease (CVD, cancer, COPD, OA, etc)
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Increases bone density/osteoporosis
  • Reduces depression, anxiety, cognition
